BIRKENSTOCK TOKIO: La Dolce Vita
Words by Gregory Noonan
In Italy, they have a saying, ‘tutto passa’ – everything passes. But not in the sombre sense, far from it. This synthesised kernel of knowledge born from generations of experience, culture, art, expression and passion reminds us to love the moment. Life is serendipitous; it is an amalgamation of fortune and chance that has allowed us to cross paths with the most important people, and places in our lives. From quiet walks along the cool sands of Mediterranean beaches under the setting sun to a raucous night around the table of your local bodega with friends, that and everything in between was made possible by the cosmic soup of chance.
In this day and age the key ingredient to good living is to be present; and to be intentional with the people, moments and objects that fill our lives. To fill our lives with good objects does not mean to fixate on monetary value either, something the good folks at Birkenstock know more than a little about. In the game for over
two-hundred-and-fifty years, they’re a brand that’s built its name on living intentionally, offering good objects that contribute to a beautiful present. With the debut of the Birkenstock Tokio, we took this sultry clog to these sun-bleached cobblestones of Sicily, where our good friend Marta introduced them to la dolce vita.
From the lab to the street, the Tokio has been formed from generations of experience to land atop the pinnacle of streetwear. With heritage at its core, this novel entry in the classic clog line-up is designed to bring us together over shared passions, and a shared love for expression, and discovery. From London, to Tokyo, this re-interpretation of a modern classic is about the moment, the path and the people we meet along the way. From a shared love for an ever-evolving story, the Tokio is a bridge between cultures and personalities, reinterpreted through the lens of street culture.
With timeless, effortless style at its core, the Tokio’s soft suede upper is complimented by subtle brass buckle fastenings and a snug collar that shrouds the ankle. But where the real magic happens, is underfoot. Rocking with Birkenstock’s perennial, beloved cork-latex footbed, this wondrous piece of craftsmanship has been shaped by generations of knowledge to anatomically mold, and shape to your foot over time. Born from a love of design, perfected for the moment, the Birkenstock Tokio is a new name in a generational tapestry of street approved chic.
